The benefits of our car insurance

Extra protection against uninsured drivers

If your vehicle is involved in an accident caused by an uninsured motorist, we'll refund any excess you've paid. You’ll need to provide us with details of the other vehicle and driver

We’ll drop you home after an accident

When your car's not safe to drive, we'll deliver you to your front door (or wherever you're heading) and whisk your car off to get fixed with one of our approved repairers Footnote [1]

Our promise for any repairs we make

Following a claim we guarantee the quality of repairs made by our approved repairers for as long as you own the car, even if you change insurers. Footnote [2]

What does our car insurance cover?

In short, it covers you against the cost of accidents, damage and theft. Exactly what we cover and how much for is down to the level of insurance you choose.

Car insurance for electric and hybrid vehicles

Car insurance for your electric and hybrid vehicles. We’ll be by your side for every mile you take.

Which level of car insurance cover is right?

You can sniff out cover in many shapes and sizes. We’ve kept it simple. You can choose between comprehensive insurance and third party, fire and theft insurance.

Comprehensive car insurance

This is our insurance with the biggest biceps. It’s like an extra shield against the costs of damage to your own car, for example, if you crunch into a pothole.

Third party, fire and theft insurance

While this is our lower level of cover, it gives you more protection than the basic ‘third party’ cover that everyone needs on the road in the UK.

Compare the levels of Aviva Car Insurance cover

None of us would choose to pay for car insurance. But it’s there so that bumps, scrapes or crunches to your car keep any dents in your routine or bank balance to a minimum. Here’s what each level of our insurance will protect against.

If it sometimes feels like we’re speaking a different language, you can find explanations for the important terms and words in our car insurance glossary.

Unfortunately, we can't cover everything - make sure you're happy with what's not covered by checking our motor insurance policy wording.

Loss or damage

Money towards a new car if someone steals yours, or we'll arrange and pay for repairs if they're needed after an accident or fire

Fire and Theft only

What you owe others

If you injure someone, damage their vehicle or wreck their property in an accident, we’ll pay to put it right

Uninsured driver cover

If your vehicle is involved in an accident caused by an uninsured motorist, we'll refund any excess you've paid. You’ll need to provide us with details of the other vehicle and driver

Vehicle recovery

If your vehicle's in no shape to drive after an accident or fire, we'll deliver it to one of our approved garages. We'll take you and your passengers home, get you where you're going or pay up to £500 towards the cost of an overnight stay or public transport. Geographical restrictions apply

Fire and Theft only

Driving other cars

Cover for driving someone else's car if you're 25 or over at the start of the policy, you're the vehicle policyholder and the vehicle's owner has given you the green light. It covers any third party costs, but not repairs to the vehicle

Legal costs

We’ll put an amount towards any legal fees that might come about if you’re in an accident that you're legally liable for

Motor injury protection

Cover for you, your partner or named drivers in case of serious injury or death from a road accident

Up to £5,000 per person, per policy year

Individual no claim discount

Hang on to your no claim discount if you claim for loss or damage through no fault of your own - such as in chance meetings with potholes, storms, flooding or animals - you'll not wave goodbye to your no claim discount

Electrical breakdown

Should you have glitches with your on-board computers, and any other electrical parts

Tyres

Any punctures, cuts or bursts – even if they’re caused by braking

Boost your insurance with our optional add-ons

Fine tune your cover so that it fits like a tailored jacket. Stitch in these extras as you go through your quote, which will show your price for any you choose. You’ll have the chance to decide if you want to keep them or not before you go ahead and pay for your cover.

Protect your no claim discount

Make sure one claim doesn’t make years of hard-earned discounts disappear forever.

Motor legal services

This gives an expert legal helping hand and costs of up to £100,000 to recover compensation after a car accident, when you did nothing wrong. It covers you, your named drivers and any passengers. You’ll only get this support if it’s likely you’ll win your claim against the person responsible. It also provides up to £10,000 for lawyers' costs to defend you against prosecution for a motoring offence.

Courtesy car

We’ll keep you on the road with a courtesy car if yours is damaged, written off or stolen. You can only pair this with our comprehensive insurance.

Extra motor injury protection

Raise the level of your cover in case you, your partner or any named drivers suffer a serious injury or death from an accident in the insured car. You’ll need to have comprehensive cover to add this.

UK breakdown cover

Never stand stranded at the roadside if your car gives up on you. Decide between different layers of cover, either hand-in-hand with your car insurance, or just on their own. We’ll either repair your car on the spot, or make sure you, your passengers and your car get where you need to go. But we don’t offer this if you live in Northern Ireland Footnote [3] .

European use

Pack up your cover and zip it into your case on a trip across to the continent. You can also add European breakdown cover (so you’re never trying to negotiate a roadside pick-up in another language). You can only use these to upgrade a comprehensive insurance policy.

Our other types of motor insurance

Regular cars aren’t the only way you might be zipping around. Plug in to an electric car policy. Keep a van on the move. Or just cover yourself for a weekend away.

What you need to get a car insurance quote

So that we can give you an accurate price, we'll ask for a few snippets of information, this includes:

  1. A little bit about you – just the usual, like your name, your date of birth and your address
  2. When you want your cover to start – anywhere from right now to within 60 days
  3. Who else will be driving – we’ll need details of any other drivers too
  4. How much cover you’ll need – which type of insurance and any add-ons

Why choose us for car insurance?

Our cover has been given a 5 Star Rating by Defaqto. Their experts lift up the bonnet of our policies, and sift through every nut, bolt and washer – it’s not based on opinions or hearsay.

Car insurance FAQs

How do you work out my car insurance price?

Car insurance providers use the details you give us to paint a detailed picture of how likely you are to need our help. We then crunch the numbers to give you a price that considers all sorts of risks, like how old you are, where you live or even how many people have made a claim in the last year. Find out how we calculate your car insurance price.

What's the difference between a principal policyholder, a vehicle policyholder and a named driver?

You’ll spot these terms in your policy wording. Knowing which you are is important, as it might affect parts of your cover.

The principal policyholder is the person who filled in the form and took out the insurance – for themselves, and for any other policyholder or named driver.

The principal policyholder can name a separate vehicle policyholder, who drives the vehicle most regularly and who builds up the no claim discount.

The principal policyholder may add named drivers too, who can also drive the car under the policy.

Do I have to use an approved repairer or specialist?

We’ve built up a network of repairers all over the UK, that we’ve approved to carry out work for our customers. If you use one of these, their work will be guaranteed for 3 years (terms and conditions apply).

If you use a repairer who’s not on our approved list, you may have to pay a non-approved repairer excess on top of any other excesses on your policy.

How much non-approved repair excess you pay depends on the type of policy you have.

Using a non-approved repairer, you also won’t get a courtesy car, unless you have an AvivaPlus Premium policy. Your repairer may offer you one.

We may also need to visit the unapproved repairer to inspect and authorise the repair, and we can’t guarantee the quality of repair.

Am I covered to drive other vehicles?

With our comprehensive insurance, you're covered with third party only insurance if you need to drive someone else's car – the minimum level to drive legally in the UK. We'd pay compensation to someone you injure or for damage you cause to other people’s vehicles or property in an accident – but wouldn't cover you for loss of, or damage to, the vehicle you were driving.

Only the vehicle policyholder has cover to buckle into the driving seat of another car – not named drivers or a principal policyholder who isn’t the vehicle policyholder. Driving other cars also isn’t covered for any policy in the name of a business.

The driver must be 25 or older when your policy with us started or renewed. You don't need to tell us that you'll be driving another car, but the car owner must have let you drive it.

If you’re not sure whether you’re covered or not, call us Footnote [6] on 0345 307 8590 before you set off.

For cover limits, exclusions and further information peek into the Documents section of your policy in MyAviva. Your certificate of insurance has all the details, and can give the thumbs up if you have this cover.

Will my car insurance allow me to drive abroad?

From 2 August 2021, the UK became part of the Green Card Free Circulation Area (GCFCA) again, which is made up of all 30 European Economic Area (EEA) countries, as well as Andorra, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia, Switzerland, and the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar.

This means you’ll no longer need to carry a Green Card when driving in these countries.

Your insurance policy will provide the minimum cover needed to drive your insured vehicle in most European countries, which is third party only cover. This covers your legal liability to others – for example, if you injure someone in a motor accident or damage their property. However, it won’t cover you for loss of, or damage to, your own vehicle. For this kind of cover, you need to add Foreign Use.

Foreign Use is included as standard with an Aviva Online, Aviva Premium, or AvivaPlus Premium policy. Or if you have comprehensive cover with one of our other Motor Insurance products, you can add Foreign Use for an additional price. Foreign Use gives you a similar level of cover to what you have in the UK, when driving in the countries listed in your policy booklet (PDF 233 KB). Cover is valid for up to 90 days for one trip and up to 180 days during the year.

To add Foreign Use onto your policy:

  1. Log in to MyAviva
  2. Select your Motor policy, then choose 'Details'
  3. Choose 'Amend my policy'
  4. Under Excesses and additional covers choose ‘Yes’ to the Foreign Use option

Or if you’re a new customer, simply add Foreign Use to your policy when you get a quote.

Foreign Use isn’t available with an AvivaPlus Basic policy.

Please note: Driving Other Cars (DOC) cover, courtesy vehicles, UK breakdown cover (Rescue Cover) and Motor Legal Services only operate within Great Britain, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. Adding Foreign Use will not extend these covers outside of the UK.

For exclusions and further information, see the documents section in MyAviva for the policy you want to view.

If you plan to travel with your own car to a country not listed in your policy booklet, please contact us first.
